I think there are three categories when we're buying/deciding to buy stuff. 1) things that we want, 2) things that we need but can live without (e.g. you have a tiny hole in the corner of your shirt that no one can see - you need a new one but the old one is doing fine too), and 3) things that we desperately and immediately need.
Impulse buys definitely fall in the first category. Buys that fall in the third category are completely fine. But what about the second category? I feel like most of our unplanned spending falls within this category.
I think there's a lot of margins in that middle category, though. Everything from "this would improve my life noticeably" to "this would improve my life a bit but I have lots of free alternatives."
